A few months ago, while searching online for an article that was mentioned in String, Felt, Thread (one of the books I read in February) I came across this Master’s thesis that had been published online in 2014 – Piecing together creativity: feminist aesthetics and the crafting of quilts by Melanie Anne Pauls. And after realizing that it spoke to many of the same themes I was interested in, I did what any total nerd would do, and proceeded to print off the full 200 page thesis so that I could read it at my leisure. (Because I really, really dislike reading on screens.)
what I read in February and March
Yes, I know it’s April, but for some reason (ok, we’ll call that reason the one year anniversary of the pandemic), my brain was having none of it when it came to blogging about what I read, even though I read some books I really loved in February. Which is also why I didn’t want to just skip blogging about these books! So I’m sharing them now.
what I read in January
When January started, I didn’t intend for my entire reading list to be focused on art (with a smattering fo design and creativity thrown in) but it was what I was in the mood for, so I decided to lean into it.
what I read in December
I’m a little late on my December reading post, but I didn’t want to just skip it, because my December reading list includes one of my favorite books of the year. Truth be told, I finished less books in December than just about any other month this year, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. I actually started A LOT more books last month, but couldn’t get through them.
And for that, I blame The Women I Think About at Night.
what I read in November
a little tour of some of my bookshelves
It’s no secret I’ve been reading A LOT lately! Recently, someone in my online mentorship program asked what I did with all those books. And the short answer is, I keep them! The longer answer is that I like to write in my books (it helps me think) which makes it hard to do library books, sell books back, or give them away. But on top of that, I also like to have my books to revisit from time to time. And, I just really love to be surrounded by books!
what I read in October
what I’m reading: Everything She Touched: The Life of Ruth Asawa
I’m a sucker for a good artist biography, and this book on sculptor Ruth Asawa did not disappoint. I’ve been lucky enough to see a number of Ruth’s iconic hanging wire sculptures, thanks to my many trips to San Francisco (where, thanks to living there for most of her life, she is best known), but I confess I knew very little about Ruth’s life or art beyond those. Which is a shame, because Ruth Asawa was a badass!!
what I read in September
I was really happy to continue my August reading momentum (and then some) into September! It helped that I had a long weekend away at a friends cabin with no cell service or Wi-Fi to distract me, but I managed to carve out some significant reading time the rest of the month as well.
What I’m reading: My Life with Things and Having and Being Had
I started off September pretty much the same way I ended August, reading all the things. As I mentioned over on Designing an MBA, I’m currently in a “gathering” phase, taking in lots of ideas so that I can begin working on a book proposal this fall.
What I didn’t mention in that post was what I’m planning on writing the book proposal about. It should come as no surprise, but I want to write a book on art. Not about the business of art, like I write about on Designing an MBA (though I wouldn’t complain about writing a book about that either) but rather about the power that art can have when we bring it into our everyday lives.
